This client wanted their brand-new bathroom unpacked and set up with a foolproof system that everyone in the family, as well as their guests could easily navigate. They also wanted to keep the cost of organising products as low as possible, so we chose to only use bathroom organiser products from Kmart.
In the unpacking phase, there were a lot of products that were either past their used by date or almost empty. Once we had culled everything down, gave them a wipe over and sorted them into categories – we set off to buy the containers and labels.
Because this is a family home, we went with open-topped baskets – when there are kids involved, it’s best to make putting things away as easy as possible.
In the bathroom cupboard, we chose multi-use baskets with attachable labels, rather than bathroom organisation products to sort and organise the collection and created this fool-proof, uncluttered space.
In the bathroom drawers, we used products that would protect the wooden vanity from spills. Acrylic trays are great as bathroom drawer organisers, they’ll keep everything in its place.
It’s always really interesting chatting to our clients and finding out what matters to them. This family needs simple systems as they are not naturally organised types. The ladies of the house are also much more interested in hair care than skin care, so the heat tools and hair products took pride of place in the top drawer.
And most importantly, they don’t the time to do this themselves – so that’s why they got a professional organiser in.
You can stock everything you may ever need, or you can have a calm, uncluttered space. You can’t have both.
Finding organisation
How to organise a bathroom cupboard
- Do a massive declutter before you do anything else. You will be surprised how many products are old, past their used-by date or no longer useful. This also applies to pantry organisation.
- Use attachable labels so the system can be tweaked and changed as the family’s needs, those metal clips last forever!
- For items used daily, like toothbrushes – give them prime realestate, ease of use should be front of mind.
- Turntables are your best friend.
- You probably don’t need 25 bath towels. Often dog pounds and vets accept donations of these sorts of things, so try to edit your collection.
- Use acrylic drawer dividers that wash easily- they will protect your drawers from spills.
- Less is more. You can choose to have every thing anyone may ever want and need – or you can choose a calming, functional, unclutterd space. But, you can’t have both.
